Beverly resident Anne Alt asked Rep. Mary Gill (D-35th) to help pass a transit reform/funding bill during veto session. Here’s Gill’s response.
As Streetsblog Chicago readers are well aware, this is a pivotal month for regional sustainable transportation. State legislators will return to Springfield for a fall veto session, taking place on October 14-16 and October 28-30. While things are tense right now in Illinois, hopefully the lawmakers won't be distracted from passing a transit funding/reform bill, to permanently save Chicagoland from projected 40 percent transit service cuts and 3,000 layoffs.

Eyes on the Street: The basically completed Granville Greenway has likely reduced car traffic, increased sustainable transportation use
Yesterday, I visited the site where a northbound minivan driver fatally struck Juslene Akeza, 4, as she was crossing Talman Avenue (2630 W.) westbound on the north side of Granville Avenue (6200 W.) in West Ridge. That tragedy happened along the recently installed Granville Avenue Neighborhood Greenway. But as I noted in my writeup of the crash, the new east-west street design was basically irrelevant to the motorist's failure to hit the brakes in time, the reason why police cited them for failure to reduce speed.

They add, "We dress in costumes or high-style gear, and bicycle decorations are encouraged as well. The ride is as long or as short as anyone wants to go, with an excellent afterparty and prizes afterwards."

A driver fatally struck Juslene Akeza, 4, at Granville. The greenway’s design was irrelevant to their failure to brake in time to avoid tragedy.
Tragically, a 72-year-old minivan driver fatally struck Juslene Akeza, 4, as she was crossing the street last Wednesday during the evening rush in the West Ridge neighborhood. The motorist was cited for negligent driving.

Eyes on the street: Taking a spin on the new-and-improved Milwaukee protected bike lanes in River West, with a few constructive criticisms
Last December, the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board blamed the diagonal Milwaukee Avenue bikeway for traffic jams created by car commuters fleeing Kennedy Expressway construction. "[On] many of the former alternate routes, such as... Milwaukee [the Chicago Department of Transportation has] reduced... vehicular capacity by adding bike lanes," they stated. "Those roads don’t offer any meaningful relief from a clogged expressway anymore."

Yes, CTA needs to be and feel safer. But despite what the U.S. transit czar implied, Trump shouldn’t use that as an excuse to send in National Guard.
Yesterday, Trump's Federal Transit Administration chief Marc Molinaro scolded Chicago leaders about crime on public transportation in a Tribune op-ed titled, "The CTA has become a rolling symbol of abdication. Riders don’t feel safe." Read it on the Tribune website, Bluesky, or Twitter.
