Tragically, last Saturday night in Chicago's Rogers Park community, a pickup truck driver struck and killed 67-year-old pedestrian James Reed Tillman, and then fled the scene. Police eventually located the vehicle and made an arrest, but currently no one is in custody for the crime.

The victim may have been walking in the street because a gate limiting pedestrian access on the south side of Wacker was locked at the time.

Police charged a driver with first-degree murder after he allegedly struck pedestrian Steven Moore, 63, Saturday in Roseland, and then turned his car around and ran Moore over again as he struggled to get up, killing him. The motorist then reportedly drove around the neighborhood threatening other people until he rammed another driver, fled on foot, and was finally arrested.

The driver said he didn't see the boy before running him over, possibly due in part to the design of his vehicle.

Tragically, a box truck driver struck and killed 44-year-old Karl Hall last Wednesday evening as he walked across Halsted Street (800 W.) in the University Village neighborhood. The trucker failed to stop to render aid and has not been apprehended.

But while the event raised awareness of the urgent need to make streets safer for all users, it also was an example of what's beautiful about riding bikes.

Mills was the fifth vulnerable road user killed on Pulaski in Chicago in the last nine months.

The victim was at least the fifth person on foot killed on a Chicago street this year.

Sadly, last Thursday night a car driver struck and killed a 52-year-old man who was crossing Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at 47th Street in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood.
