Last Tuesday, Streetsblog Chicago published summaries of nine 2025 pedestrian and bike fatality cases on surface streets in the city of Chicago, which we hadn't previously covered in our Fatality Tracker posts.

Tragically, it appears that Chicago saw its first pedestrian fatality case of 2025, with the killing of Alex Rivera, 32, on Sunday, January 5, in the Chicago Lawn community area.

CPD says robbery suspects in stolen Jeep may have killed Robert “Bob” Levin, 61, on bike near Fullerton/Ashland in Lincoln ParkĀ
A nearby West Town address found in Levin's Rogers Park apartment indicates he may have chosen Ashland as a direct route from home, although it's a bike-hostile one.

John Ward, 55, fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver in Garfield Park, was the first person to die from a bike crash in Chicago this year
Thankfully, 2024 has been a relatively safe year for people riding bicycles within the city of Chicago, with no fatal bike crashes as of July 31. That's compared compared to five cycling fatalities in 2022 by that date, and three bike deaths in 2023 by the end of July.
