One benefit to Armitage being a mess is I have seen very little speeding on it recently…but seriously, why did they take down the construction cones so far before construction was actually going to be finished. Whoever did this work for the water department modeled it off of construction sites I’ve only seen in rural hamlets.

  • Jeff Omiecinski

That strip of Armitage is almost un-bikeable. Random loose gravel pits transition between holes, bumpy cement, and gravel strewn asphalt. I’m amazed they were allowed to leave it like it is.

  • JacobEPeters

I always avoided that section of Armitage anyhow, either via Palmer, Bloomingdale Trail, or Cortland anyhow, but yeah, it’s difficult just to cross it on bike at an intersection given how much of that loose gravel has given way to massive pot holes.

  • ohsweetnothing

“almost”?? I’ve avoided it for well over a month now, hah.

There’s a lot wrong with the DNAinfo coverage of the 7th cyclist death (Lt. Danny Carbol, Monday evening).

The article only gives “south suburban Evergreen Park” as the location of the incident. What street block or intersection did this crash occur?

The article also fails to describe what type of collision happened, except for this victim-blaming language: “colliding with a vehicle as he rode his bike”

Lastly, the driver of the vehicle that killed Lt. Carbol is not mentioned anywhere.

I found similar poor coverage in the Tribune’s article as of yesterday morning.

John or Steven, do you plan to follow up on this story?

  • johnaustingreenfield

Yes, we’ll have something up later today.

  • johnaustingreenfield

Actually, this was not the 7th bike fatality in Chicago this year, since the crash happened in Evergreen Park. The Tribune stated that it was, but they changed their headline after I pointed it out to them.
