This week, the Chicago Transit Authority announced that the final stage of the Red and Purple Modernization Phase One Project will begin this summer. Specifically, the transit agency is wrapping up the reconstruction of the Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, and Bryn Mawr stations to upgraded, wheelchair-accessible facilities, and the CTA will start reconstructing southbound Red and  Purple tracks. Community meetings about the project will happen on June 21 and 22 – see the bottom of this post for details.

One popular soon-to-be returning program from the Chicago Department of Transportation is "Learn to Ride," which offers adults and children info on how to safely get around by bicycle.

The goal is to find ways to connect destinations and recreational opportunities, improve safety for bicyclists, and reconnect neighborhoods separated by industrial uses, highways, and rail yards that litter the area. 

“No matter where you’re traveling to in Chicago, you can get there on a Divvy bike,” DOT Commissioner Gia Biagi said in a statement.

The project, which includes Ogden between Pulaski Road and Western Avenue, is being coordinated by the Chicago Department of Transportation in cooperation with local alderpersons.

The Chicago Department of Transportation, which oversees the program, said this was done in response to last year's UIC study of our city's speed cameras.

It's been a long and bumpy road, but it looks like Chicago is finally on its way to becoming an easier city for visually-impaired residents to navigate.

IDOT and other local transportation agencies are taking steps to address the challenges this project may pose for people commuting by both cars and more sustainable modes.

Local leaders need to get serious about permanently reducing the farebox recovery ratio; finding new funding sources; and abolishing Rauner's collection fee ASAP.

The report report suggests that cities like Chicago not only need to provide equitable safety infrastructure in communities of color, they also need to rethink traffic law enforcement in order to remove barriers to mobility.
