Taking a ride on Madison’s new (and quick) bus rapid transit line
Despite its status as the most populous city in the Midwest, Chicago infamously does not have a BRT system. So last month, I traveled to Madison to spend a day in Wisconsin's capital city to experience what it might be like to live in a midwestern city with a bus rapid transit system.

Guards Endanger 606 Users While Chasing a Cyclist
Guards shouldn't be patrolling the narrow elevated path in SUVs, and they definitely shouldn't be speeding down the trail to confront cyclists.

Rotterdam’s Boulevards Demonstrate How to Make Chicago’s Bike-Friendly
I've discovered few similarities between the city of Rotterdam, where I've been living for seven weeks, and Chicago. The most striking similarity is the nearly identical layout of the boulevard streets. While biking from my apartment in Rotterdam towards the cool neighborhood of Witte de With, I realized that as I was cycling on the side road of a wide street, I was really biking on a facsimile of Kedzie Boulevard in Chicago.

44-Unit TOD Building Proposed at an Abandoned Drive-Through in Bucktown
A proposal for a transit-oriented development in Bucktown is going before the Chicago Plan Commission for approval this Thursday. Pro- and Anti-Moreno Factions Square Off Over TOD Development Issue
First Ward Alderman Proco "Joe" Moreno has been one of Chicago’s leading proponents of transit-oriented development. He sponsored the city's 2013 TOD ordinance, and he’s been a strong supporter of dense, parking-lite developments near ‘L’ stops in his district. He’s also one of a handful of aldermen who don’t approve zoning changes for new housing developments unless ten percent of the units are affordable, rather than letting the developer opt out by paying into the city's affordable housing fund.

Don’t Deride the Delay: More Ventra App Testing Will Ensure Better Quality
Earlier this month, the CTA, Metra, and Pace announced that they are delaying the launch of the Ventra mobile app from this spring until this fall, and that an independent civic app testing group will help vet it. Contrary to what Chicago Tribune transportation writer Jon Hilkevitch wrote, that's not a sign that there are "undisclosed issues" with the technology. Rather, it shows that the transit agencies are being careful to thoroughly test the app before releasing it to the public. Given the rocky launch of the Ventra card two years ago, that's a wise strategy.
