Last month, when I interviewed State Rep. Kam Buckner about efforts to address the looming $771 million Chicagoland transit fiscal cliff, he noted that the discussion of the topic in the media has been something of a "boy's club." (Today, Buckner and I talked some more about this subject with Outside the Loop Radio's Mike Stephen on a show airing this Saturday morning, which doesn't undermine that argument.)

In case you can't tell from Streetsblog Chicago's homepage, beating the drum on the region’s impending transit budget crisis is our top priority right now. After all, if the state legislature fails to pass a funding and reform bill this summer, the likely result will be roughly 40 percent service cuts and 3,000 layoffs. That would be disastrous for the region and counter to SBC’s mission: Making Chicagoland a safer and more efficient, equitable, environmentally friendly, and enjoyable place to get around.

This has been a big year for Chicagoland sustainable transportation issues, but there are greater challenges ahead in 2025.

Once again, the generosity of walk/bike/transit boosters is fueling our reporting and advocacy.

Due to editor-in-chief John Greenfield being seriously injured on a bike trip, this was a challenging spring. But thanks to funders and readers, the site is once again rolling.

During one of his regular multimodal bike tours of the Midwest, John Greenfield was injured while bicycling and is currently in a hospital in Carbondale, Illinois. The crash happened around noon on Friday. Many details of the crash are unknown and we are withholding what may be known but unconfirmed while John's family and attorney attempt to learn more.
