Metra Finalizes Service Cuts on Electric District, With Minor Improvements
Metra finalized the schedule change to the Electric District line it proposed in May, which increases service between downtown and Hyde Park, and downtown to Kensington. It reduces service for anyone who doesn't live or work near those stations. The change, to take effect on Monday, September 11, is undesirable, and a good way to further decimate a difficult-to-use and expensive transit system.

Central Area Committee Pushing New Downtown Rail Transit (Again)
The Chicago Central Area Committee, a coalition of business executives, has proposed to build a network of automated rail lines downtown and in nearby neighborhoods to expand transit capacity for growing areas and better connect underserved communities. Their proposal includes a plan to provide rapid transit service on the Metra Electric corridor, something many South Siders have advocated for, which the committee says would help spur development.

Is $2 Billion Red Line Extension Best Way to Provide Transit in Far South Side?
The Chicago Transit Authority released a major study today, the next step in the developing project to extend the Red Line southward from the 95th Street terminal to 130th Street in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood. The Environmental Impact Study is required by the federal government before the CTA can ask for funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Obama Library’s Jackson Park Location Will Be Easy to Visit Without Driving
Today a spokesman for the Obama Foundation officially confirmed that the Obama Presidential Center will be located in Jackson Park on the South Side, and he lauded the project as the nation’s first urban presidential library. “For the first time, a presidential center will be in the heart of an urban community," foundation chairman Martin Nesbitt, said in a statement.

Coalition for a Modern Metra Electric Wants More Service, Fare Integration
Transportation advocacy organizations and community groups have joined forces as the Coalition for a Modern Metra Electric, pushing for improvements to the commuter rail line that could lead to better job access and more economic development on the South Side. They want to see rapid transit-style train frequency, fare and schedule integration with the CTA and Pace, and – eventually – the extension of the line all the way to O’Hare.

“Gray Line” Advocate Mike Payne Wants Rapid Service on Metra Electric Line
The idea of Metra running its Hyde Park and South Chicago-bound Electric District line more like a CTA 'L' line may be gaining traction. If so, much of the credit goes to advocate Mike Payne, who has been tirelessly promoting the concept online and at public meetings. He calls this proposed rapid transit service as "The Gray Line," since that's one of the few colors that doesn't yet appear on the Chicago Transit Authority train map.
