Lakefront Trail Separation

The trail will be closed from Berwyn to Ardmore for a widening project until mid-August.

The new bike route adds a half-mile to the trip, but cyclists are rewarded with scenic views.

The trail reroute also adds a half-mile detour for bicyclists.

After many (one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine) meetings the first phase of what will probably be a decades-long process of the complete reconstruction of North Lake Shore Drive took place yesterday afternoon. This meeting was the most straightforward as the elements considered had already been narrowed down and because most attendees were repeats and familiar with the meeting's format.

The North-Oak plan includes a new concrete walking path by the Oak Street underpass.

The collision, which critically injured the driver, was at least the third crash along the south Lakefront Trail within a few months.

As to be expected, the new separated pedestrian and biking paths are raising some questions from trail users.

The new separated bike path between North Avenue and Fullerton Avenue is just about ready for its ribbon cutting, and it’s unofficially open for riding.

This morning city and park district officials cut the ribbon on the first completed section of the Lakefront Trail separation project between 31st and 41st Street. This provides a preview of what trail separation will look like on the rest of the trail between 71st and Ardmore – where there’s sufficient space to create different paths for pedestrians and bicyclists. Separation along the entire lakefront is slated to be completed in 2018.
