Thanks to "hyper-vocal bike advocates," alderpersons are getting the message that a citywide grid of protected, well-enforced bike lanes is needed.

If we could only get the police department to ticket the thousands of drivers who run reds at these intersections every day, we could make even more progress on preventing drivers from endangering people on foot and bikes.

Over a roughly six-week period, at any given point about one in five stations has no "classic" bikes (the original blue non-electric cycles) for rent and one fifth of docked bikes were flagged as broken.

Hopefully the new infrastructure will result in higher rates of motorists yielding to pedestrians, as CDOT says was the case on State, and fewer crashes.

Hopefully as more people demand a different approach, IDOT will finally begin to prioritize safety and convenience for all road users, not just drivers.
