From Wilson station opening highs to disappearing Divvy lows, 2018 was a year to remember for Chicago transportation.

Chicago Department of Transportation commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld has overseen the completion of several good projects during her four years on the job, including the Loop Link bus rapid transit corridor, the Bloomingdale Trail, the Chicago Riverwalk, and 100 miles of new and upgraded bike lanes. (However, it’s worth noting all of these initiatives were launched by her higher-profile predecessor, Gabe Klein.)

The span is the second of five planned bridges to improve lakefront access on the South Side.

Currently the flyover gets you over the dangerous Grand and Illinois intersections, but you still need to use a narrow sidewalk to cross the river.

The money will be used to study ways to encourage mixed-use development near the new stations, as well as other strategies to maximize the benefits of improved transit access.

Other upgrades of the recent rehab include new lights, reconfigured stairs, high-def security cameras, and motorized doors that meet ADA guidelines.

More cyclists are staying out of the door zone, more motoristss are yielding to pedestrians, and people are driving at safer speeds.

The authors argued that groups like the Trust for Public Land, which managed Bloomingdale Trail development, tend to overlook potential impacts on housing affordability.
