66-Year-Old Man Fatally Struck in the Garfield Ridge Neighborhood

A senior who was struck and killed by a driver in the Garfield Ridge community in what appears to be the second pedestrian fatality case of 2017.

On Sunday, January 8, at about 1:40 a.m., the driver was heading south on in the 5200 block of South Central Avenue when he struck the senior, according to Police News Affairs. The victim was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released yet, pending notification of kin, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The driver, a 55-year-old man who stayed on the scene, told police that “the victim jumped into the street in the middle of the block,” according to News Affairs. However, there’s no indication of whether there were witnesses to back up the motorist’s account of what happened. The driver was cited for failure to reduce speed.
