John transferring to Chicagoland rehab hospital this week
John Greenfield, who was injured while cycling near Carbondale, Illinois, has progressed in his recovery enough that he is transferring to a rehabilitation hospital in suburban Chicago on Thursday. The crash occurred on Friday, April 21, when an unsecured pipe hit John in the head. John was incapacitated, and upon arrival at at SIH Memorial Hospital in Carbondale was placed into a medically induced coma for several days. After scans showed no signs of increasing risk to his brain doctors allowed him to come out of the coma. John's brother, Dave, and several friends from Chicago went to visit him immediately. Male Cyclist, 20, in Critical Condition After Being Doored, Struck, Dragged
A 20-year-old man is in critical condition after a motorist opened a car door in his path while he was biking in Portage Park, throwing the man into traffic, where the bike rider was then struck and dragged by an SUV driver.

Drunk Driver Who Killed Hector Avalos Sentenced to Only 100 Days in Prison
At a hearing today, Judge Nicholas Ford gave Robert Vais, the driver who struck and killed cyclist Hector Avalos while drunk, a relatively light sentence of 100 days in a state prison plus two years probation. Vais must also perform manual labor as part of the Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program once a month for two years, and undergo drug and alcohol treatment.

IDOT Truck Driver Injured Pregnant Divvy Rider on Augusta Last Week
An Illinois Department of Transportation employee driving a Ford pickup truck struck a pregnant Divvy rider at around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3, at the intersection of Augusta Boulevard and Ashland Avenue. The 34-year-old victim, who was riding from East Village to work on Michigan Avenue, sustained injuries to her face and body; her pregnancy seems unaffected.

Driver Kills Cyclist on Clybourn, Where IDOT Is Blocking Protected Bike Lanes
Police are questioning the driver of a Mercedes who was involved in a head-on collision with an Inifiti and then fatally struck cyclist Robert "Bobby" Cann, 26, from behind. The crash took place while the Mercedes driver and Cann were traveling southeast on Clybourn Avenue near Larrabee Street in Old Town. The driver, who stayed on the scene, is in policy custody but any charges have yet to be filed, pending an investigation, according to Police News Affairs. Police have not released the driver's name, but DNAinfo reports that he is 28 years old.
