Loop Pedicab Ban Passed in Committee; Council Votes Today
During a 2.5-hour committee hearing yesterday on a proposed ordinance to regulate Chicago’s growing pedicab fleet, aldermen heard passionate testimony from some 20 operators and advocates. They argued the legislation, which includes a ban on downtown operations, would hamstring the industry and kill jobs.

Eyes on the Street: Unwalkable Kinzie Sidewalk Finally Replaced
The steps, broken pavement, and roller coaster ramps at the southwest corner of Kinzie Street and Clark Street were all repaired recently. The construction was originally supposed to wrap up by spring 2013, but didn't finish until December. The six-month long construction was unusually complex, according to 42nd Ward Alderman Reilly's newsletter.

Emanuel Touts His Transportation Accomplishments at Active Trans Gala
On Tuesday, the Active Transportation Alliance honored several movers and shakers in the local sustainable transportation scene at an awards reception in the Revolution Brewing taproom. Mayor Rahm Emanuel was given the Extra Mile Award in recognition of his role in implementing bike-share, bus rapid transit, the Red Line South rehab, and protected bike lanes.

Troubling Lack of Compassion for Endangered Divvy Rider on Lake Shore Drive
What would you do if you were driving northbound on Lake Shore Drive near Ohio Street and pulled up on a young woman riding a Divvy bike by the median of the high-speed highway, obviously lost and terrified? I’d like to think most of us would slow down, roll down the window, ask the woman if she’s OK, and offer directions on how to safely exit the drive at Chicago Avenue.

Zoning Committee Passes Watered Down TOD Ordinance
Last Wednesday, the City Council zoning committee passed Mayor Emanuel's proposed ordinance allowing more walkable, less car-oriented development near train stations. The Problem With Wolf Point and Its 1,285 Parking Spaces
The Wolf Point site, just south of the Apparel Mart and Chicago Sun-Times building at the confluence of the Chicago River's three branches, has been begging for more productive uses for decades. Momentum has been building since developers associated with the Kennedy family proposed a plan for three towers at Wolf Point in 2007, and the proposal picked up speed in 2012 as it began accumulating the various permissions needed to move forward. Last Thursday, all 21 members of the Chicago Plan Commission signed off on the project, at a hearing that revealed one of the key flaws in the way Chicago manages growth and development.
