Eyes on the Street: A Helpful Sign Along a Handy Bike Shortcut
Ever since they began demolishing the Finkl Steel Mill, I lost one of my favorite bike shortcuts between Near Northwest neighborhoods like Wicker Park and Bucktown and North Lakefront neighborhoods like Lincoln Park and Lakeview.

Evanston Protected Lanes Face Backlash While Making Dodge Ave. Safer
Evanston installed new protected bike lanes on Dodge Avenue from Howard Street to Lake Street last month, and already some residents are complaining that the lanes have made it unsafe to park their cars. But these fears are unfounded because Chicago has had protected lanes with a nearly identical design for five years.

Eyes on the Street: The Randolph Protected Bike Lane Starts to Take Shape
The Loop Link bus rapid transit corridor on Washington Street includes a concrete-protected bike lane between the island bus stations and the curb. But the construction of the raised, curbside bus platforms and dedicated bus lanes on Madison Street involved the removal an existing bike lane.

Eyes on the Street: RYB Fest — A Memorial Ride for Blaine Klingenberg
About 200 people on bikes filled the streets of Chicago today to honor fallen bike courier Blaine "Beezy" Klingenberg during RYB Fest. An Epidemic of Bike Crashes; Bad Trail Design May Have Caused One of Them

Eyes on the Street: Tactical Urbanism Blooms on Broadway
Last month when the city put up signs banning right turns from northbound Halsted onto southbound Broadway at Grace, eliminating a slip lane, the intersection became little safer. Thanks to what appears to be a guerrilla intervention by an unknown party, the site also became a little prettier.

Police SUVs That Aren’t Serving or Protecting: Part II
We owe a debt of gratitude to the police officers who work hard to make our streets safer for all Chicagoans, which includes enforcing traffic laws. And, as I’ve written before, an officer has every right to park his or her squad car in a crosswalk, bus stop, or bike lane if it’s necessary to quickly access a trouble spot in the line of duty.
