Extendin’ The 606 eastward is a cool idea, but my word, I’m sure it’ll be a challenge. Building some kind of bridge above/below the Kennedy sounds nuts. I think that they’re best idea is to build bike lanes on that little street (N. Marshfield Ave.), where it could connect to Cortland and later Clybourn.

Protected lanes should make this plenty appealing, but I imagine that people living on Marshfield won’t be thrilled about cyclists flying down their street.

If they ran the Bloomingdale Trail to Clybourn, they’d have to put back the bridge they moved from Ashland to save money.

  • Attrill

There’s really no need to make the connection between the 606 and future trails to the East all that complicated. The Metra viaducts over Cortland are clearly in need of replacement, and Cortland could be widened at the same time. The area connecting the 606 to Cortland is empty and owned by the city, so that can easily be made into a connector from the 606 to Elston. There would be a traffic crossing of Ashland, which isn’t ideal, but it would provide a usable connection of the 606 and Elston, as well as whatever future bike lanes or paths are built along Cortland and through the Finkl site.

Hmm, maybe we could transplant the old Belmont/Wester/Clybourn overpass, which they took down last month. Just kidding, I assume that structure has been recycled into concrete dust.
