    Regarding Ald. Dowell’s parking proposal, signage for this kind of restriction needs to be clear and visible. I had a nasty surprise several years ago when I parked on State near Archer and came back to find the car gone. Made some phone calls and learned it had been towed. Signage was high up and completely invisible, hidden by tree branches. Also, it assumes that one is aware of events at Soldier Field. That’s a bad, expensive problem.

    I fought the ticket, with many photos showing how invisible the signage was. The judge dismissed the ticket, but I was out of luck on the $$$ towing and storage fee.

    A CPD officer I know commented that Chicago is NOT well prepared for the kind of attack that happened on the NYC bike path yesterday. This is something we should push our mayor and aldermen about.

    The LFT is incredibly susceptible to a similar attack like this. Some sort of bollards need to be placed where there is the most ped/cyclist traffic: the cul-de-sacs at Fullerton, North/Lasalle, Randolph, and Monroe.

    Not to mention the entire LSD stretch along Monroe Harbor needs some sort of protection. I am more concerned with the collateral damage from car crashes than terrorist attacks though. As it stands, in many places you can just drive off LSD and onto the LFT by going over a curb.

    On the brighter side, it does look like the City is looking into protection in areas where the path comes closest to LSD.

    I think much more could be done to beef up the LFP for sure, and it’s obviously worth doing, but there’s going to be some risk in PBLs going forward no matter what it seems.

    Most of the recent PBLs were designed to allow access to regular size snow plows, etc., to make maintenance easier. It’s going to be hard (if even possible) to completely prevent PBL access to the type of truck the terrorist used in NYC as a result. The only way I can envision would be to use some sort of retractable bollards—and that gets very, very expensive fast.

    You’re right, but I don’t envision a PBLs being as much as a target (because bike lanes are always empty, right?) as I do plazas and promenades. Honestly, its pretty impossible to bollard all these spaces.

    Think of the crowds going to and from the Metra stations, spilling into the cramped sidewalks as is. We need a ped/bike only E-W street at least during rush 6:30 – 9:30 and 3:30 – 6:30 with the removable bollards that you speak of. Monroe would be a great candidate, as it only has 2 parking garage entrances from the river to State, which could be accommodated easily.

    Sidewalks can be just as susceptible to these sorts of attacks, and I think the Mag Mile should get bollards. Can you imagine people being trapped between the buildings and those planters?

    Terrorism is a complete and utter non issue compared to the reality of riding a bike on the streets of Chicago and dealing with aggressive non-terrorist motorists.

    There are literally thousands of intersections that need to be improved where people are actually killed and injured on a weekly basis.

    I would take anything that comes out of a CPD officer’s mouth with a grain of salt anyway.

    I agree with you about intersections and the hazards that bikes and peds face every day.

    FYI – this comment was coming from an officer who knows what he’s talking about and DOES get and care about bike and ped issues. He’s not the only out there.

    It’s easy to be cynical about CPD officers because some of them are SO awful in how they handle bike crashes. Please remember that some of them are very good people who do care.

    Yes, parts of the lakefront are very vulnerable and there have been past car incursions with injuries. The Monroe Harbor section desperately needs some protection. That area is way too vulnerable.

    My main quarrel with CPD is not how they handle traffic issues but their social justice record and utter lack of accountability. I have a hard time finding any good in an organization that protects murderers and class traitors as FOP (who endorsed Trump BTW) and CPD does.

    I really don’t think you can go to work every day surrounded by this kind of culture and not have it effect you. Where are the cops that are speaking out against the department as a whole? All I hear are crickets.

    I have no doubt some young working class people join CPD with good intentions but I think you and I both know many of the kind of people who choose to become cops were just your high school bullies who had no other options and like feeling powerful.

    Once you join the force and union (I’m generally very pro union fwiw) your choices are to shut up about the systemic abuse or look for another job which most cops don’t have the skills for.

    I don’t see how you could prevent a car from driving into the LFT unless you surrounded the whole trail with barriers. Terrorism is such a rare event that I’m not too worried about it.

    I agree you can’t. But the most popular sections like Belmont to Museum campus could be fairly easily blocked off. Certain access points would use bollards and the rest would have much needed guard rails. The latter because I’m more concerned with a car careening off LSD on to the path.

  • So can we start being worried about the people who *already* drive on the LFT to haul their barbecuing equipment? I encounter several vehicles each summer trying to do this, usually at either Oakwood or 63rd.
