it’s the Union West development, it has no relation to Union Station

  • Fixed, thanks.

I’ll probably cross-post to the chainlink too, but cyclists and peds SHOULD NOT take Foster, esp. if there is increased truck traffic due to the tunnel. Lawrence, while recommended per the bike map, is also terrible as the street frequently narrows to eliminate bike lanes and it’s quite gridlocked.

The best route is to follow roughly Carmen Ave — there are multiple ped/bike bridges only and paths that follow the river: Eugene Field Park, Kiwanis Park (behind Von Steuben), River Park all have safe, off-street alternatives that mean you can stay out of the way of trucks.

Wishlist: they could find 0.01% of the total budget of the tunnel project to provide meaningful wayfinding for the route of during construction. Right now the path is blocked by what looks like a giant Lego and it simply says “Path closed.” With the new terminus of the North Branch Trail coming, it would be significant to have a “39th Way” that moves people safely from River Park east-west to NBT.

  • There has never been, and there is no planning for, a good way to get from the end of the river trail in Eugene Field Park (terminus of all the Carmen-and-parks route) onto the trails in Gompers that feed into the new under-bridge tunnel. They recommend you take Foster.

Um. No, thanks, not doing that with my pig of a cargo trike and my kid on her little one …

I agree. I’ve raised this with CDOT and plan to push with Ald. Laurino too.

  • I’m not sure what they could do, short of bulldozing houses. Avers-to-Argyle-to-Pulaski is … slightly better than Foster, but getting that transfer across Pulaski is a puzzler, given how much it gets treated like a speedway with even more lanes than it’s supposed to have.

The old bus turn-around could be converted into a path and the mid-block be given some kind of crossing treatment. Alternatively, if the nursing home there allowed an easement for the path it would be more passable.

But no matter, you are correct: this would be very hard to enact and the stated path stinks right now.
