Curious: how did Streetsblog get the name of the 18-year-old Northwestern student who was killed in the collision with the cement truck? The WLS and Tribune articles I read this morning had not yet released the name of the cyclist.

The Tribune coverage was really terrible. Not only did they call it an “accident” several times, but they also described the cyclist as getting caught in the wheel of the cement truck. That’s like saying a shooting victim caught in the way of a moving bullet.

NBC5 had her name. Both ABC and NBC have been very nice to point out that she was not wearing a helmet.

Not only is it not illegal to ride without a helmet, but a peanut shell would provide as much protection in the face of a multi-ton cement mixer.

My sympathy to the family and friends of Wlodzimierz Woroniecki and Chuyuan Qiu.
