People who destroy art are… just the worst. How can you look at someone’s creation that probably took massive amounts of time and not respect it enough to NOT destroy it.

    The worst.

  • Tell that to the Neanderthals who took down Dustin Shuler’s “Spindle,” AKA the Berwyn Car Spike, in order to put up a Walgreens.

  • duppie

Not a great comparison. The “Spindle” was taken down by its owner, who had the right to do so, even tough you may not like it.. The Diversey stop art was destroyed by vandals.

  • Str0ng

The worst is art funded with tax dollars. It serves no functional purpose. Art is a luxury, people forget that.

  • It functions to make people happy, which isn’t a luxury at all.

  • Mishellie

“The life of the arts, far from being an interruption, a distraction in the life of the nation, is very close to the center of a nation’s purpose – and it is the test of the quality of a nation’s civilization.” – JFK

  • Mishellie

I have no idea what that was. BUT I do know that walgreens is about as far as you can get from art.

  • Mishellie

I’m guessing he doesn’t realize that lots of art has functional purpose. Like, for example… architecture.

  • Str0ng

You’re quoting a guy who escalated the war in Vietnam okay.

  • Str0ng

Architecutre is private, because the developer pays for it. Sadly, progression (and lower rents FYI) gets taken hostage by those advocating to turn every building into a historical landmark.

  • Mishellie

    … oh honey. *pats head*

  • Mishellie

Doesn’t mean he was alway wrong.

  • Str0ng

    lol. mother hen.

  • That Ansel Adams guy… taking pictures on the taxpayer dime. What a waste of money, amiright?

  • Anne A

Here’s one photo. If you Google “Berwyn car spindle” you’ll find more info.

  • No joke, we considered putting the car spike in the image for the Streeetsblog Chicago masthead, but we thought that might be a little over-the-top.

I believe it was falling apart or too expesive to relocate.
