  • Makes total sense that Divvy helps bike shops. Since becoming a Divvy rider (after a very long hiatus from riding at all), I have purchased two helmets, winter biking gloves/hat/mask, gotten my old bike refurbished, and bought a cadence meter. I am probably missing a few items.

Serious question. Is NerdWallet a big deal? I see that this blog and one other blog that escapes me at the moment (gawker maybe?) reference the site a fair bit, but know of no one else that mentions it or references it. Is it big in the financial/analytics community?

Also, I looked at the map of best driving cities. Haha, no thanks.

The NerdWallet article is the truth. Driving in Chicago absolutely blows. I moved here from the south where driving was cheap and easy, and I was astonished to find out how expensive, stressful, and inconvenient it is to drive here. Registering the car, driving, and parking are crazy expensive. My car has been battered by other drivers attempting to parallel park. Traffic is horrendous. Short distances take forever. Chicago driving is major hassle compared to most of the U.S.

This is why I am amazed when Chicago bike and transit advocates talk about how we need to make driving more expensive and inconvenient to promote the alternatives. It’s already expensive and inconvenient. People are driving because the alternatives are even worse… driving from the north to the south takes an hour, but you’d have to make it take 2+ hours for public transit to win.

Unfortunately, this is true. The city is making progress in becoming more bike-friendly–in selected neighborhoods. Transit is marginally decent–again, in a few select neighborhoods. But for the most part, as I’ve said before, Chicago’s approach to getting around is all stick and no carrot.

But that said–I’m totally with ohsweetnothing’s take, below, on the best driving cities–“Haha, no thanks.”
