Great news on the Divvy ridership data!

It’s interesting that bus ridership has declined. I do feel that service is worse than it was a few years ago, before the “doomsday” budget cuts that eliminated express lines and reduced frequency on other lines. After all of the hype, people just accepted the reduced service, and you never hear about it anymore. But it makes a difference.

It’s also not surprising that the purple line has seen the smallest increase in ridership. Taking the purple line is a demoralizing experience, mostly because of the long gaps between trains. The transfer at Howard can add 15 minutes during rush hour — so I have to account for the possibility that my commute will take 15 minutes longer, if I happen to arrive just after a purple train leaves (something I can’t plan at all since I’m relying on the 22 bus to get to Howard). Traveling four miles should not take an hour, but it often does because of that transfer.

  • The RTA produced a 2012 ridership report, which is lax on reasons aside from “job losses” and a “weak recovery” to explain lower ridership on various routes (especially Metra as a whole). I’ve asked them for service details, on which routes have more service, less service, and which routes were shortened, extended, or eliminated (the 11-Lincoln was eliminated in 2013, so it wouldn’t be included).

I used to love taking the 56 as it dropped me off closer to neighborhood bars/shops than the blue line (especially once you pass Wicker Park), but since the doomsday cuts I’ve totally given up on that route.

I admit that it feels like total crybaby wingeing (sp?), but I can’t be alone here…and I imagine there are several routes that loss ridership for similar reasons.

Choosing Marty Oberman as Metra chair seems like an uncharacteristically good choice for the rail agency. Oberman used to stand up to Richard J, as one of Chicago’s few independent aldermen, and Madigan seems like a pussycat compared to Ol’ Man Daley.

  • I believe it doesn’t run as late as it used to either.

I used to live in Evanston and I can’t begin to count the number of times I was on the Red Line coming into Howard, train stops and waits, finally pulls into station. Get out, there’s another Red Line train just sitting on the other track taking up space and a Purple is visible climbing out of the yard.

  • CL

Yes, exactly. That’s my life. Only now they’re doing this thing where they wait and then pull into the southbound platform so that you don’t have a chance of catching the purple train that’s pulling away. Although they did hold the purple train for us once last week — everyone was running up and then down the stairs, and the conductor was like “Slow down, we’re holding it for you.” But we were running because that’s definitely not always the case.
